BOCCE
Bocce at Centro Caboto Centre
Home to Manitoba's only indoor bocce courts, Centro Caboto Centre keeps this classic Italian game close to Café 13 hospitality, league nights and casual community play.
OVERVIEW
What is bocce?
Bocce is a classic Italian ball game in the boules family. Players roll larger balls down a long court toward a smaller target ball called the pallino.
The goal is easy to understand, but every throw asks for touch, angle, patience and strategy. It can be relaxed and social, or precise and competitive in league play.
HOW TO PLAY
How bocce is played
Bocce is easy to learn: roll with touch, read the court and try to leave your colour closer to the pallino than the other team.
The equipment
A standard set has eight large bocce balls, usually four per team, and one small target ball called the pallino.
Starting a frame
One side throws the pallino into the court, then rolls the first bocce ball. The team without the closest ball throws next.
Strategy
Players can point gently toward the pallino, bank off the sideboards, nudge a teammate's ball or move an opponent's ball away.
Scoring
Only one team scores in a frame: one point for each of its balls closer to the pallino than the other team's nearest ball.
HISTORY
A short history of bocce
Bocce has ancient roots and a long Italian life. The modern game grew from a simple challenge: roll a ball close to a mark, then measure who came closest.
Ancient roots
Target-ball games were played around the ancient Mediterranean, and Roman versions helped carry the tradition across Europe.
An Italian name
Bocce is the plural of the Italian word boccia, meaning ball. Italy shaped the modern court game and many of its familiar customs.
From streets to courts
For generations the game was played in streets, piazzas, gardens and club courts before organized leagues made rules more consistent.
Still social
Modern bocce keeps that older rhythm: a measured throw, friendly conversation and a game that welcomes new players.
